File size

Why is my 3MF so big before I convert 3MF to STL?

3MF is a ZIP archive wearing a mesh costume. Here is where the weight actually comes from, what the 150 MB limit means, and how big the STL next to it really is.

3MF weighs more than its geometry

Open any 3MF as a ZIP and you will find meshes alongside a thumbnail image, material and texture definitions, and a build listing every object. Slicers write those extras so a project can be reopened and re-sliced exactly. STL has none of them — it is a flat list of triangles and nothing else.

That is why a 3MF that feels absurdly heavy often converts to a modest STL. The archive's weight is mostly presentation.

What the 150 MB cap is protecting you from

  • The tab needs a few times the archive size in memory to hold triangles and normals at once.
  • Encoding a very large mesh blocks the main thread, which is what makes a converter look frozen.
  • A clear rejection beats a hung tab and a wasted upload.

If your file is over the cap: re-export it without textures, split a large assembly into separate objects, or reduce polygon count in your modeller — then convert each piece.

Binary STL vs ASCII STL on disk

For the same mesh, every binary float is four bytes, while ASCII prints each coordinate as decimal text. The text version can be roughly five times larger. Since both encode identical geometry, binary is the default unless a tool demands plain text. Our binary vs ASCII guide covers the trade-offs.

Fastest shrink: pick binary STL, re-export the 3MF without textures, and split anything still over 150 MB into per-object files before converting.

Can you shrink an STL further?

Not losslessly. An STL is already a bare triangle soup — no compression scheme will make it smaller without dropping detail. The only real lever is reducing triangle count in the model, which is a modelling decision rather than a conversion one.

Frequently asked

Why is my 3MF file so large for such a simple model?

3MF is a ZIP archive: thumbnails, textures, materials and per-object metadata ride along. Export without textures or split the build to cut it down.

How big is the STL compared with the 3MF?

Usually much smaller — STL is pure geometry. An ASCII STL prints every coordinate as text and can be several times larger than the binary version.

What is the maximum file size?

150 MB per file, so the tab stays responsive. Re-export without textures or split the model if you go over.

Can I shrink an STL without losing detail?

No — STL is already minimal. Use binary over ASCII, and cut triangle count in your modeller if you need a genuinely smaller mesh.
